Pink tinged Hydrangeas

As you can see, I like photographing flowers also.  I have said many times, it is a way of preserving their beauty forever.  The hydrangea bushes are large, plentiful, and beautiful at Evergreen Cemetery at White Store, NY.

Davis memorial overview

Davis, Rupert
June 2, 1937 - December 12, 2006

Rupert Charles Davis Jr., 69, passed away on Dec. 12, 2006 at his home in Holmesville.

He was born June 2, 1937 in Cooperstown, a son of Rupert C. Davis and Ruth H. Beebe, both deceased. On July 25, 1959, he married Halys E. Houk.

Rupert spent his childhood in various places including the Otego area, but mostly in New Berlin. He graduated from New Berlin High School in 1956. He was a Manufacturing Engineer and started his career at GLA, Norwich, being with the company for 34 years. He then went to work for Electron Coil, Norwich, where he worked until his retirement.

He was a member of the Holmesville Baptist Church where he had been a Deacon, Treasurer, Jr. High Sunday School teacher, and he was very active with various other jobs and programs. He had been a Town of New Berlin Councilman, and at the time of his death was Fire Commissioner for South New Berlin. Rupert was a member of the Harold J. McIntyre American Legion in South New Berlin. He was in the Army from 1960 - 1962.

Rupert loved his Lord and his best friend and wife, Halys. He loved spending time with all of his family and with each additional grandchild and great-grandchild, he was more in awe of God’s great creation.

He enjoyed the outdoors working in his garden, mowing his lawn, and working on various household projects where he was accompanied by his dog, Brutus. His backyard was often filled with the laughter of children as he played kickball, softball, soccer, and many other games with them. More often than not, the neighbor children and friends to his children and grandchildren were also there.

He was a friend to many, always willing to lend a hand whenever there was a need. Sometimes it was helping with frozen pipes, broken furnace, brakes, or the occasional ride. He always had a kind word and had a wry sense of humor.

Rupert is survived by his children, Karen and Nick McKie of South New Berlin, Kim and Steve Voorhis of South New Berlin, Scott and Lisa Davis of Nazareth, Pa., Julie and Don Hunt of South New Berlin and Brent and Dawn Davis of Norwich; grandchildren, Michael and Katie McKie, Michelle McKie and Lance Thompson, Kyle Hunt and Nicole Bodie, Stacy Hunt, Justin Hunt, Ashley Davis, Ryan Voorhis, Andrew Hunt, Kirsten Davis, Eric Voorhis, Tiffany Davis, Amanda Davis, Noah Davis and Emily Davis; great-grandchildren, Nathan McKie, Anthony McKie and Tyler Thompson; sisters, Alice Southwich of New Berlin, Arlene and Sanford Jones of New Berlin and Lorraine Lindsay of Amherst; a sister-in-law, Gladys Davis of Ingleside, Ill. and his father-in-law, Hubert Houk of Burlington Flats.

He was predeceased by a son, Christopher; a brother, Arthur Davis; a sister, Shirley Davis and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Houk of New Berlin.

Funeral services will be at the Holmesville Baptist Church, South New Berlin, on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp and son, Rev. Scott Davis officiating. Calling hours will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

March 28, 2011 - Halys E. (Houk) Davis

Halys E. (Houk) Davis went to meet her Savior, along with her beloved husband and precious son, on Monday, March 28, 2011, while at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Halys was born on Feb. 13, 1941, in New Berlin, to the late Hubert Houk and Elizabeth Fletcher Houk. She spent her childhood years in New Berlin and Edmeston.

She graduated from Edmeston High School in 1959. She married the love of her life, Rupert C. Davis Jr. on July 25, 1959, and they had six children together.

She worked in factories throughout her life, retiring from Unison Industries. She was a member of the Holmesville Baptist Church helping with Primary Church and serving as Sunshine Chairman for many years.

She was greatly involved with the Bi-Centennial Celebration for the Town of New Berlin and was honored to serve on the Board until Dec. 31, 2010. She was involved in many town projects, but the Police Department, of which she was the co-commissioner, was her pride and joy. She truly enjoyed each moment of service.

Halys was happiest while her husband, children, and grandchildren were around her. You wouldn't have to be around her very long before you learned of her love for her family and of how proud she was of each one.

Halys was a loving, generous, and caring person. Within moments of meeting her, she would know all about you, your family, your job, etc., and you were happy to share with her because you knew that she truly cared about you. She had many wonderful friends who were very supportive of her through the years and she felt very fortunate to have their friendship.

Halys is survived by her children, Karen and Nick McKie of South New Berlin, Kim and Steve Voorhis of South New Berlin, Scott and Lisa Davis of Nazareth, Pa., Julie and Don Hunt of South New Berlin, Brent and Dawn Davis of Norwich; grandchildren, Michael and Katie McKie, Michelle McKie, Kyle Hunt, Stacy and Mike Hackley, Justin Hunt, Ashley Davis, Ryan Voorhis, Andrew Hunt, Kirsten Davis, Eric Voorhis, Tiffany Davis, Amanda Davis, Noah Davis, Emily Davis, and Hannah Davis; great-grandchildren, Nathan McKie, Anthony McKie and Tyler Thompson; her siblings, Clarence and Wanda Houk, Pittsford, Ruth Pfaffenbach, New Berlin, Mary Lyon, New Berlin, and Esther Matousek, Charlotte, N.C.

She was predeceased by her husband, Rupert; her son, Christopher; her mother, Elizabeth Houk; and her father, Hubert Houk.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Holmesville Baptist Church, South New Berlin. The officiating ministers will be the Rev. Romeyn Kipp and Halys' son, the Rev. Scott Davis.

When still living in Sherburne, NY, I watched for funeral dates and often went to the cemeteries as soon as I could to photograph the flowers before they wilted.

I have several photos of the beautiful flowers for Gladys Gregory when I find them.

Nearly all of the folks at Fairview Cemetery have Find A Grave Memorials.  If you are not familiar with Find A Grave, I encourage you to check it out.

I also encourage you to create memorials for your family.  Even if you only add your parents, grandparents, siblings, and others closest to you, it helps to link your family together.  It is easy
to do and satisfying to see families linked.  You may be the only one who knows their information.

Many of my family can actually be traced clear back to the 1600s just from memorials created by
volunteers.

I kiddingly call it my Volunteer job.  I can just sit at my computer and create or add to memorials.
I started  out photographing family stones in particular and others that interested me.  Since the elements are doing a number on the stones, I hoped to preserve the information at least in photos.  In comparing more recent photos taken by others, I am happy to say, I did accomplish that goal in a small way in my little corner of the world.

My parents headstone is a prime example.  There are photos of it when new and now with the aging process well established.

Find A Grave is now owned by Ancestry.com and it is a wonderful resource for
searchers.  Find A Grave is a world wide site with memorials completely done by volunteers.

All of those Find A Grave memorials are made available on Ancestry.com FOR FREE meaning they put them in the LEAF HINTS and they can be added to the person in your family tree that you are looking up.

One can really hope you find more that just the dates of their birth and death, but even those can
be helpful.  Finding an obituary can be treasure leading to more family.

I strongly encourage you to add the place of their birth and death if possible.  You have no idea how helpful that is if you find MULTIPLE people with that name and birth year.   And believe me there are multiple people in this world with the same name.

Actually, I'm thrilled when I find a name that is unusual, because it fits into the research puzzle nicely sometimes.

Roses for Ruth Wilking.  She was my friend and nursing supervisor at Chenango Memorial Hospital.  She left us much too soon.  Ruth and Tom were a real love match.  It was nice to see, but very difficult for her when he passed.  At least they were only apart for a short time.  It gives a new meaning to Together Forever.
